Notice to government, petroleum dealers’ federation

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Monday issued notice to the State government and the All Kerala Federation of Petroleum Traders on a writ petition filed against the latter’s decision to shut down petrol pumps after 8 p.m. and on Sundays from August 18.

The petition was filed by the Jan Sakthi.

The Federation had said that it was unsafe for pump owners and workers to work late into the night in view of an unscientific load-shedding in the State and increasing number of incidents of looting, theft and other problems created by anti-social elements at various pumps.

The petitioner said the decision was against public interest.

The decision violated the provisions of the Kerala Petroleum Dealers Licence Order, the petitioner said.

Petition dismissed

A Bench comprising Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice A.K. Basheer rejected the petition filed by Sadhujana Vimochana Samyuktha Vedi president Laha Gopalan seeking a direction to Harrisons Malayalam Limited to desist from interfering with the fundamental rights of Vedi members to conduct peaceful and non-violent agitation in the Chengara estate in Pathanamthitta district.

The petition sought a direction for taking legal action against the elements who had assaulted members of the Vedi.

Bail granted

Justice K. Hema granted bail to all 10 Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-Bharatiya Janata Party workers in the case relating to the murder of Vishnu, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) worker, in Thiruvananthapuram recently. The court ordered that they be released on bail on executing a bond for Rs.50,000 with two solvent sureties to the like sum. They should not leave the district without the permission of court.
