Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial “Crisis in the Caucasus” (Aug. 11). The crisis was triggered by the foolhardiness of President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia who launched a massive offensive against tiny South Ossetia, provoking resurgent Russia to intervene strongly. Mr. Saakashvili is a confirmed U.S. stooge who sent Georgian forces to assist the U.S. troops in Iraq in return for a possible membership of NATO. The people of the Caucasus will continue to suffer as long as the U.S. indulges in a power game in the region. Col. C.V. Venugopalan (retd.), Palakkad The U.S.’ condemnation of Russia for its intervention in South Ossetia is the limit of hypocrisy. After attacking Afghanistan and Iraq leading to millions of deaths, it has no moral right to accuse any other country of aggression. Javed Khan, Mumbai East Europe has been the starting point of many conflicts and tensions, which have led to dreadful consequences for the world in the past. Georgia’s aggression should be condemned by all. Another war, small or big, will permanently cripple the world economy. Varun Vijayaraghavan, Chennai
