Racing : Horse
Total stakes amount will be Rs. 3,82,75,000 Mysore: About 700 horses are expected to participate in the Mysore main racing season scheduled to commence here on Thursday (Aug. 14). The 20-day season will conclude on October 26. The newly elected Chairman of the Mysore Race Club, N. V. Babu told newspersons that the total stakes amount will be Rs. 3,82,75,000. The increase in stakesmoney was kept on hold after discussions with the Karnataka Racehorse Owners Association on account of the increase in the betting tax by the state government. However, the subsidies will continue like last year. Stating that the club is going to face a severe financial crunch this year due to the increase of betting tax from two percent to four percent, the Managing Committee has decided to approach the state government for tax relief. Almost all trainers of Bangalore and Mysore and Chennai’s R. Foley will be racing their wards here. All jockeys licensed by Bangalore as well as jockeys from other centres will don the silks. The Chairman further said that the betting terminals have been upgraded with new software and thermal printers and scanners have been installed to increase the speed of totalizator transactions. Twenty new betting terminals have been added to cater to more number of punters. The track has been maintained in good condition too. Important race days: Mysore Million (Aug. 22), Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar Memorial Gold Cup (Aug. 29), Karnataka Racehorse Owners’ Association Mysore 1000 Guineas 2008 (Sept. 12), Maharaja’s Gold Cup (Sept. 19), F. K. Irani Memorial Gold Cup (Sept. 25), Fernhill’s Palace Mysore 2000 Guineas 2008 (Oct. 3), Mysore Dasara Sprint Championship (Oct. 8), Governor’s Gold Cup (Oct. 17) and Poonawalla Mysore Derby 2008 (Oct. 26).
