HAL plans factory in Kasaragod

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), a premier aviation company and leading public sector undertaking, Navaratna, is planning to set up a Strategic Electronics Manufacturing factory on 200 acres of land in the Kinfra Industrial Park at Seethangoli in Kasaragod district. The HAL proposes to invest Rs.200 crore in the venture.

According to official information here on Monday, Defence Minister A.K. Antony will lay the foundation stone for the factory at a function at the Kinfra Industrial Park on August 23. Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem will preside.

The Strategic Electronics Manufacturing factory is being planned as an extension of the Hyderabad Avionics Division initially.

The facility would be expanded to include new projects under the aircraft programmes and converted into a full-fledged division in future. The Avionics Division of HAL, Hyderabad, is engaged in the manufacture of a wide variety of electronic equipment in the areas of communication, radar, navigation, computers and electronic warfare. These products are being supplied for fitment on various aircraft and helicopters that are supplied to the Armed Forces. Apart from these, the division also meets the requirements of avionics for space applications.

In addition to the assembly, testing and manufacture of the above types of systems, the division also provides repair maintenance support for these avionics which are fitted across various aircraft platforms.

The division has also embarked on a plan to upgrade the existing versions and design of newer versions of these systems for various fixed wing and rotary wing platforms. The requirement of these systems will continue over the next six years and beyond.
