Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader Oommen Chandy on Monday made it clear that it was for the United Democratic Front (UDF) leadership to take the final decision on whether the coalition should be expanded. Responding to questions on the possibility of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) headed by K. Muraleedharan being admitted to the UDF, Mr. Chandy said he did not want to respond to the question as the NCP leader himself had stated that he had not applied for an entry. Even though the NCP was a constituent of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by the Congress at the Centre, the allies were free to chart their political positions at the state-level. The UPA alliance was part of national politics and had shaped up according to the political circumstances in Delhi. “But the decision on UDF expansion will be taken here at the state level after appropriate discussions between the partners,” he said. To a question whether the NCP alliance would be beneficial or detrimental, Mr. Chandy quipped “I am not that far-sighted.”
