Two arrested in U.P. fake currency note case

Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW: The field unit of Special Task Force on Monday arrested two persons involved in the printing of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) in Agra and seized Rs. 1.10 lakh counterfeit currency from them.

They have been identified as Ashok Verma and Puran, belonging to Dholpur and Agra respectively.

The ADG, (Law and Order and STF), Brij Lal told reporters that a coloured printer cum scanner, equipment for printing the counterfeit money and two mobile phones were seized from the accused. Mr. Lal said the gang used to print currency by scanning the original notes.

The ADG said Ashok Verma alias Bobby, who was arrested in 2006 on the same charges, was recently released on bail and re-started his operations. The two-member gang had agents in the rural areas who distributed the fake currency in the markets, he said.

The total haul of fake currency from the chest of State Bank of India’s Domariaganj branch has reportedly crossed Rs. 2-crore mark. The current update was not known. Mr. Lal said till the time sorting was being done by the Reserve Bank of India officials, the figure of fake currency was known. Since the counting has been taken over by SBI officials they have refused to divulge the details, he added.

Abid alias Pandit and the bank cashier, Sudhakar Tripathi, allegedly involved in the Domariaganj fake currency case were brought to Lucknow by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for seeking their judicial remand on Monday. Mr. Lal said the SIT court’s jurisdiction is in Lucknow. The case was transferred to the SIT last week and on Friday the Uttar Pradesh Government recommended a CBI inquiry into the counterfeit money case.
