A world of cakes where you can have slices of Wonders

5-foot cake in the shape of the Taj Mahal takes centrestage

IT’S A CAKE: The Roman Colosseum has been recreated using icing sugar, eggs and essence at the on-going international consumer exposition at Island Grounds.

CHENNAI: The cakes exhibition, showcasing six of the new Seven Wonders of the World, is easily the best attraction for children and adults at the ongoing international consumer exhibition at Island Grounds.

The five-foot cake in the shape of the Taj Mahal, created with 450 kg of icing sugar, 600 eggs and 1000 ml of essence, takes centrestage. The Roman Colosseum, the Great Wall of China, Mt. Machu Pichu, the Petra and the pyramid at Liza are the other attractions. As the replica of the statue of ‘Christ the Redeemer’ melted,it had to be removed, said Vijay Raja, chief mentor of ICE Mega Expo.

Herk, working at Quality Inn Aruna and his friend Ishika, a student of visual communication at a city college, were impressed with the cake exhibition. “I have seen cakes that weigh two or three kg but nothing of this size,” Herk said. All Ishika could manage was, “I cannot imagine making one like these.”

It took 80 workers, including 10 craftsmen, to carve the wonders, Mr. Raja said.

At the exhibition a visitor can also ogle at the 63-inch LCD television screens and a fascinating array of electronic gadgets, all under one roof and without sweating! For, the exhibition area of around two lakh sq. ft, is air-conditioned.

Plush leather sofa sets and massage chairs from Malaysia, mobiles, laptops and water heaters besides exotic varieties of tea, supari, pickles and garments are on sale. Banks and educational institutions offering a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes have also put up stalls.

The exhibition also houses some home-grown brands such as Prestige and Aachi. The exhibition is on till August 18 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
