Chennai: Actor Aamir Khan’s directorial debut ‘Taare Zameen Par’ has been dubbed into Tamil and Telugu and will be released on September 12.

The actor, who is in the city to receive the Gollapudi Srinivas National Award, told reporters on Monday that he had received several requests from different parts of the country to have the film made into other Indian languages.

“Surya has dubbed for me in the Tamil version,” Aamir said. The music for the Tamil and Telugu versions will be released by the end of the month. The Tamil version will be called ‘Vaal Natchathiram’ and the Telugu version ‘Nelameedha Taaralu’. Pyramid Saimira will be the film distributors.

Aamir said that director A.R. Murugadoss, who made ‘Ghajini’ and is currently working on the Hindi remake, had shown him a newspaper clipping that had people requesting a Tamil version of ‘Taare Zameen Par.’ The actor, who plays Surya’s role in the Hindi remake, said he enjoyed working with Murugadoss and co-star Asin.

Aamir, who is usually reluctant to attend award ceremonies, said he had decided to personally accept the Gollapudi award because he deeply valued the organisation and the organisers. This is the first award for ‘Taare Zameen Par’ that Aamir has agreed to accept personally.

Gollapudi Maruthi Rao, who instituted the award in memory of his son, said Aamir had shown great sensitivity in directing the film, choosing to focus on the child’s story. The film tells the story of a dyslexic eight-year-old’s struggle within a conventional education system that brands him “idiot, duffer, lazy and crazy.” Aamir is the teacher who helps the boy regain confidence.

The actor said he believed the primary role of cinema is to entertain.

“I have nothing against larger than life cinema… I am a huge fan of Rajinikanth myself,” he said.

Aamir said he chose to direct ‘Taare Zameen Par’ for its great script and storyline. Every parent would be able to relate in some way to the film. “Our audience is getting more and more open to different kinds of films… The same old song and dance routine is not working. Audiences want something new and different,” he said.

The actor will receive the award comprising a cash prize of Rs.1.5 lakh and a memento at a ceremony to be held at Kamaraj Arangam at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Film personalities K. Balachander, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Anupam Kher will participate in the function.
