Sports Day held

Sports day of Little Scholars Matriculation Higher Secondary School was held at Annai Sathya stadium on Saturday. A.V.N. Sigamani, Correspondent and Principal of the school presided. Students presented a colourful march past. K. Jennethul Fatima, School Pupil Leader and R. Raj Prabhu, deputy leader took the oath along with other students and lighted the Olympic Torch. N. Sarada, Inspector of Matriculation Schools, Thanjavur hoisted the flag and inaugurated the sports event s. T.S. Selvakumar, District Sports Officer distributed certificates and prizes to the students. S. Shanmugha Sundaram, President of Parent-Teachers’ Association offered felicitations.

Cash awards presented

Students of class X and XII of Pudukottai district were given cash awards and prizes at the installation ceremony of new office bearers of Rotary Club of Pudukottai Crown City. Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University M. Ponnavaikko was the chief guest. He distributed free uniforms and welfare assistances to a school at Pilakudipatti. In his special address, he said that voluntary organisations must come forward in shaping students’ life through their service proj ects. He also urged students to utilise the opportunities and take academics seriously to secure a good place in higher education.

Science exhibition conducted

Government High School, Uppiliyakudi, Pudukottai district, conducted a science exhibition recently. Headmaster of the school M. Muthukumar declared the exhibition open. In all, 16 groups participated. Science models on various phenomena were displayed. A display on herbal plants was also put up during the exhibition. Students from neighbouring schools visited it.

Test-camp for Scouts and Guides

A three-day test-camp to select Scouts and Guides for the ‘Raj Puraskar’ award was held under the auspices of the District unit of Bharat Scouts and Guides in Pudukottai recently. In all, 115 Scouts and 71 Guides participated and demonstrated their skills in various tests. The District Educational Officer M. Madevan Pillai distributed the certificates to them. The District president of Bharat Scouts and Guides S. Chinnappa presided. The Managing Director of Tea m Speciality Hospital, Saleem, inaugurated the camp by unveiling the portrait of Baden Powell, the founder of the Scouts Movement.

Rally taken out

The students of Natesanar Government Higher Secondary School at Ayakaranpulam in Vedaranyam taluk in Nagapattinam district took out a rally through the main roads of Ayakaranpulam and Panchanathikulam on Friday to create awareness among the people in rural areas on AIDS disease. Manoharan, Assistant Headmaster of the school, inaugurated the rally. It was organised by Ilanchezhiyan, president of Lions Club of Vedaranyam.

Seminar on environmental issues

Mount Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School organised a one-day seminar for its students on ‘Environmental issues of India.’ Correspondent Jayabarathan Chelliah inaugurated it. Two faculty members from Stella Maris College, Chennai, Rita Jayaraj and Gowri Sridharan were the resource persons. They spoke on scientific phenomena associated with nature. They detailed on formation of tsunami. They also discussed about the project work on ‘popularisation o f science,’ sponsored by Department of Science and Technology, Delhi. Current issues such as global warming, green house effect and pollution were also discussed. Principal S. Ravikumar spoke.
