I request the BSNL authorities to make arrangements to fix telephone consumption meters to its landline customers at their residences just like the electricity department does so as to enable the customers to get the update of their telephone use. M.S. Raghavan, Dindigul. Removal of encroachmentsThe Ramanathapuram Municipality removed some certain encroachments on roads, streets and drainage channels two years back. But the civic body is not evincing any interest to remove the remaining encroachments. The whole operation conducted in the first phase became a farce since the encroachers put up their sheds and shades again. In the consumer protection council meeting held on July 7, the Collector instructed the Municipal Office to remove the encroachments with the co-operation of the Tahsildar, Ramanathapuram. But the Collector’s instructions have not been carried out. I therefore request the Collector to issue strict instructions fixing a time limit to the Municipality to undertake the drive so as to make the town clean. G. Nagasamy, Ramanathapuram. Trauma care centre at Paramakudi GHOn Madurai-Rameswaram NH 49, frequent accidents take place. There is no adequate facility at Paramakudi Government Hospital and Ramanathapuram district headquarters hospital. The need of the hour is a 24-hour trauma care centre at Paramakudi GH. Will the authorities take necessary steps in this regard? V. Rajendran, Paramakudi. Parking rulesDriving schools do not give adequate importance in training learners of how to park and where to as well as to identify where parking is prohibited. It is worthwhile to mention here that some of the worst accidents are caused due to wrong parking of vehicles and that is why, in developed countries, prescribed lessons and examinations both written and oral are conducted, besides the usual medical test. The alarming rate of increase of road accidents causing loss of precious human lives every year in our country. In general and Tamil Nadu in particular (TN stands next to Maharashtra in road accidents) should act as eye-opener and it is time for the Government both Central and States to bring suitable enactments revising the Rules for issue of driving licenses. Asmabagh Anvardeen, Ramanathapuram. English syllabusIn the matter of giving employment opportunity to candidates, there is an urgent need to possess communication skills and easy conversation in English. For this reason the Board of Studies for U.G., P.G. and High schools, should prescribe English classics (simplified editions). The present detailed text book does not give any kind of communication. Therefore the students both in schools and colleges should be given chance for reading non-detailed text books numbering 10 to 15. This revision of syllabus will help students to acquire fluency in English. Reduction of complicated lessons both in science and humanities will bring out a standard educational system. M.S. Sankaran, Palani. Train service to BangaloreSouthern districts are connected well with the State capital, Chennai, by a number of express trains. Besides scheduled train service, the railways operate special trains between Chennai and southern districts. But, there is only one express train connecting southern districts with Bangalore, though there is a phenomenal increase in the number of passengers travelling between these destinations. The Railways should operate at least one more train from southern districts to Bangalore. In August, the Railways has announced specials between Chennai and Nagercoil, Tuticorin, Coimbatore and Madurai. But, why is that no special train is being run to Bangalore from the South? G.K.S. Kandasubramanian, Sivaganga. Pending issue of pensionersIn April 1984, the then Government of Tamil Nadu introduced a Special Provident Fund Scheme I (SPF I) with an employee’s contribution of Rs.20 per month for 148 months. The accumulated amount together with Government contribution of Rs.5,000 (later it has been enhanced to Rs.10,000) and with the then prevailing simple interest rates to those contributors after retirement. In November 2000, another Special Provident Fund Scheme II (SPF II) was introduced for an amount of Rs.50 by the employee (without any contribution by the Government of Tamil Nadu) to the period till the retirement of the employee, with a simple interest of 8 per cent. These contributions are made from the hard-earned money of the employees till their retirement date and ought to have been disbursed at the time of retirement. It is understood that these contributions have been settled to those who retired in 2004 and have not been released for those retired in or after 2005. Had the SPF II been invested in a recurring deposit in a bank, they would have fetched the cumulative amount with due interest, in the month next to the last payment. As the present State government is doling out a lot to the poor and the affected, it has to order the immediate release of the funds of SPF I and II to its retired employees. K.L. Eswaran, Bodinayakanur. Delayed police verification report
Issue of passports have been unduly delayed, owing to inordinate delay in sending the police verification report by the Commissioner of police / Superintendent of Police to the Regional Passport Office. Consequently, foreign aspirants are affected. Apparently the RPO is not calling for police verification report periodically as a rule. Every month they should send the police verification report without fail. So that the process of passport issuance would not get delayed. The Ministry of External Affairs should look into the matter. M.A. Kaja, Udangudi.
