Your article “Passport Officer told to appear before court” brings back memories of a similar event that happened to me in 1971. After my marriage in 1971, just before departure to Malaysia, it was found that there was an error in the date of birth in my wife’s passport. I had to rush from Madurai to Madras passport office to have it rectified. But in Madras, the officer was very uncooperative and I demanded to see the topmost officer. Fortunately, he was a reasonable man who not only admonished the errant officer but also had the mistake rectified within a short time. Civil servants’ salaries are paid from the taxes of the people and their sincerity must be shown in their work to serve them. But it is just not happening. It is suggested that all such mistakes be investigated, the errant person identified and severe action taken against him. The victims should be compensated for expenses incurred due to negligence of officers. And people should be courageous enough to take erring officials to task. In Malaysia , passports are issued within 24 hours and renewals within an hour. Raja Mohamed, Melur ObstructionCity and mofussil buses and vans of educational institutions halt at the Indian Bank Colony (Narayanapuram) in front of the Vinayagar Temple on New Natham Road to enable students and others to board and get off. On days of religious significance, a large number of devotees who throng the temple gather on the road for want of space inside. When those who get down from these vehicles join this crowd, the number swells and obstructs free movement of people and vehicles on this busy arterial road. It is desirable that all vehicles be stopped in front of the PDS outlet, located a few metres away from the temple and a speed hump laid at this point to slow down vehicles, to avoid the possibility of accidents. V. Krishnamoorthy, Madurai Tube lights not workingTube lights in Karumariamman Kovil Street are not working, resulting in area plunging into darkness. This has become a recurrent problem. I request the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board authorities in charge of Sangeeth Nagar on Alanganallur Road to fit quality lights and see to that they burn properly. M. Muthuramalingam, Madurai ‘Steel speed breakers’A particular sort of speed breakers with inlaid steel have been erected on many roads in the city. They cause damage to the tyres of motorcycles and cars. Besides, on Jawahar Street in Chokkikulam, most of such speed breakers are in a damaged state as well. It must be seen to that the material used for speed breakers is safe and better suited for tyres. I request the Highways Department to replace the ‘steel speed breakers’ with concrete ones. R.G. Rethinam, Madurai BSNL’s weak signalNowadays, BSNL mobile subscribers are facing a hard time. Whether receiving calls inside or outside home, the signals are weak and full of disturbances. Even within the network circle, signals are not reachable — at a time when BSNL rating is declining according to its Minister (The Hindu, August 8). When private mobile companies are giving best customer care, it is the duty of the BSNL administration to sort out this technical snag for its customers. C. R. Kumaran, Madurai
