Forum moves court for taking out rally

Staff Reporter

“School management was intimidated”

MADURAI: A writ petition has been filed before the Madras High Court Bench here to permit Popular Front of India, a federal body of three Muslim organisations from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, to conduct a rally followed by a public meeting in Madurai on August 15.

The petition claimed that the events were being conducted to highlight the role played by Muslims in the Independence movement.

The Police Commissioner here, on August 4, had declined to permit the rally and the meeting stating that they might lead to a law and order problem.

The Front is a conglomeration of Manitha Neethi Pasarai (MNP) of Tamil Nadu, National Development Front of Kerala and Karnataka Forum for Dignity.

Assailing the Commissioner’s rejection order, the district secretary of the MNP said that similar events were being conducted in Kerala during the Independence Day for the last four years without any untoward incident.

Stating that they had planned to conduct the rally between Old Kuyavarpalayam and Viragupettai in K. K. Nagar through East Veli Street, the petitioner claimed that the Corporation had given on rent the grounds at Viragupettai for conducting the meeting on receiving Rs. 11,200.

The petitioner also alleged that the Commissioner was intimidating the management of a school, the originating point of the proposed rally.
