MALAPPURAM: A group of writers and activists converged at Valillapuzha, near Areekode, in the district on Monday to express their angst at the death of James Augustine, headmaster of ALP School, Valillapuzha, during an agitation against teachers’ cluster meetings a few weeks ago. The meeting organised under the aegis of the Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sanghom condemned the circumstances that led to the death of the headmaster. The writers alleged that James Augustine was killed by Muslim Youth League activists protesting against the Class VII social sciences textbook. Writer U.A. Khader inaugurated the meeting. Sanghom general secretary V.M. Murali presided over the function. Writers M.N. Karasseri, K.E.N. Kunahammed, Manamboor Rajanbabu, Murukan Kattakada, and M.M. Narayanan; Kerala School Teachers Association general secretary A.K. Chandran; Mapila artistes V.M. Kutty and K.V. Abootty; and sanghom State vice-president Janamma Kunhunni were among those who addressed the gathering. Writers from almost all districts in the State took part in the function. They later visited the family of James Augustine at Thottumukkam.
