Steps to solve shortage of doctors: Sreemathy

Special Correspondent

Review meet held at the Malabar Cancer Centre

THALASSERY: Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has said that steps are under way to solve the problem of shortage of doctors at the Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC) here.

Speaking after a meeting of the director board of the MCC to review its functioning after its transfer from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to the Health Department, she said the problem of deficiency of doctors in the centre would be solved in a time-bound manner by appointing doctors from the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital and the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram on deputation.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who represents the Thalassery Assembly constituency, also attended the review meeting.

Ms. Sreemathy said that the MCC would be developed into a reputed cancer care centre in the Malabar region. Decision had been taken to depute 40 doctors to the MCC in one or two months.

Service of Iqbal Ahamed, oncologist and former Director of the MCC on deputation from the RCC, would be made available to the centre four days every two weeks.

It was also decided to appoint specialist doctors in other departments of the MCC.

The Minister said that the functioning of the MCC had recorded improvement after its takeover by the Health Department.

Facilities

The Home Minister said that though the MCC had good cancer care facilities, an estimated 30 per cent of cancer patients in the Malabar region went to the RCC for treatment.

This was partly because of lack of publicity about the facilities available in the centre. MCC Director Suresh Chandra Dutt and Dr. Iqbal Ahamed were present at the meeting.
