Register for banana crop insurance

SIVAGANGA: The farmers of four blocks in the district selected under the banana crop insurance for kharif season have been urged to enrol before August 15.

The Deputy Director of Horticulture C. Isravel said Sivaganga, Manamadurai, Tirupuvanam and Ilayangudi blocks of have been notified by the Agricultural Insurance Company of India for insuring under the kharif banana crop insurance scheme.

As per the scheme the farmers could insure one hectare of banana crop up to Rs.5. 87 lakh. They could also opt for insurance for a reduced sum. They have to remit a premium of 4.1 per cent of the total sum insured.

Out of this, the Government would pay 55 per cent on behalf of small and marginal farmers.

The farmers would have to pay the remaining amount. In the case of other farmers (large), the Government premium would be 50 per cent.

He said the premium amount could be remitted in any nationalised or co-operative bank of the area in which the farmer had a savings account.

They should use the forms prescribed by the insurance company.

Mr. Isravel said the compensation would be decided based on the average yield assessed through random based crop cutting experiments, as against the already assessed normal yield by the insurance company.

The last date for enrolment under this scheme would be August 15.

Hence the farmers were requested to contact the horticulture officers of the respective blocks for getting the application and enrol before the due date.
