ENTHUSIASM: Schoolchildren going by boat to participate in the cluster-level sports competitions at Government Composite High School at Kasba Bengre on Monday.

KASBA BENGRE: From seemingly incurable pranksters, students of the Government Higher Primary School at Kasba Bengre village turned into angels on Monday. Even as their proud teachers looked on with disbelief, the students set about the task of welcoming the hundreds of visitors who arrived at the school.

The school, which turns 50 on August 10, is hosting its biggest ever event, the cluster-level inter-school sports competition. Hundreds of students from over 30 schools are participating in the competitions.

M. Farook, a local leader and philanthropist, said, “Twenty-five years ago, this school had just 75 children and a dilapidated hut for a classroom. Now, over 700 boys and girls are studying here.” The school, nestled between the Netravati and the Arabian Sea, has one of the largest playgrounds in the district. Headmistress Juliet B. Pinto was busy. For this teacher, who retires in two months, it is the biggest event of her life. “After all the hard work over the years, the authorities have recognised our potential and handed us the chance to host this big event,” she said. Rain, however, played spoilsport. No sooner did the games start than a heavy downpour sent everyone scampering for cover.

But the children did not let anything dampen their spirits. When it became increasingly apparent that the rain was not going to stop, they did the next best thing of jumping into the deluge.

The teachers tried to reign in the children. Ms. Pinto, however, said, “Nothing will happen to them. If they do not play in the rain, who else will?”
