TIRUNELVELI: Demanding the impounding of stray cattle causing huge loss to the farmers, a group of agriculturists staged a novel dharna on the Collectorate premises here on Monday. Even as the stray cattle, which invade the paddy fields during night, cause huge loss to the farmers, no measure is in place to control these wandering domestic animals. Condemning this, a group of farmers, led by R. Ganesan of Kurichi, staged dharna on the Collectorate premises for a while with paddy crop in their mouth even as they were bending on the ground like a cow. “At a time when the system of having the ‘pound’ to keep the stray cattle disappeared, the farmers cannot take action against the domestic animals that caused damage to crops and those who rear it, fearing law and order problems. Hence, the stray cattle wandering on the streets, roads and fields should be impounded and sold in public auction,” Mr. Ganesan said. Another group of villagers from Paulkattalai near Tirunelveli, led by CPI district secretary R. Shanmugavel, handed over a petition to Mr. Srinivasan appealing for steps to disburse compensation to the families, which lost three school children in an accident at Thatchanallur on April 16, 2007.
