ALAPPUZHA: A Mumbai police team has arrived in Cherthala, near here, in search of a teenager who allegedly posted a death threat to Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Orkut, the popular Google-operated social networking site. Ajith (19), a B.Sc. Computer Science student at a prominent private college in Cherthala, is absconding. The Mumbai police team refused to divulge details of the case. They were unhappy with the way television channels flashed news of their arrival thus “helping Ajith to escape.” However, sources in the local police said the team arrived at the Mararikulam police station here on Sunday, informing them that the Cyber Crime wing of the Mumbai police had registered a case against Ajith on the charge of posting a death threat to Mr. Thackeray on an anti-Thackeray community forum on Orkut. Ajith’s Gmail account and postings on Orkut were reportedly kept under observation for nearly a week before the team zeroed in on his address and reached Cherthala. However, with news of the team heading for Ajith’s house being leaked and flashed on television channels, Ajith is said to have fled from his home near the Government Ayurveda College, Mararikulam. The team is learnt to have questioned his father and confiscated the hard disk of his computer. They are also observing the Orkut postings and Internet activities of around 50 persons who are members of the particular Orkut community.
