Pakistan troops lob mortars, India retaliates

NEW DELHI/POONCH: The attack by the Pakistan troops on Indian posts in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir marks yet another breach of the five-year-old ceasefire agreement.

No casualties were reported from the Indian side, which also retaliated with controlled fire, according to Army sources here.

22nd such violation

This is the 22nd violation of the November 2003 ceasefire agreement by Pakistanis since January this year.

“Pakistani troops lobbed 60-mm mortars and continued with small arms fire at the Poonch Indian post from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. this afternoon,” Army’s spokesperson in Srinagar Lt. Col. A.K. Mathur told PTI.

The intermittent firing from the Pakistanis went on during the one-hour period from their Rawalkot posts, Army sources said.

A fortnight earlier on July 28, a group of 12 Pakistani regulars had crossed over the Line of Control at Nowgam and entered Indian territory to confront an Indian patrol team and fired at a post in Khayam area, killing a jawan there.
