Photography at airport: man remanded

A Correspondent

NEDUMBASSERY: Mohammed Sali, who was arrested by security officials of the Cochin International Airport on Sunday for allegedly taking photographs of the restricted areas using his mobile phone, has been remanded to 15 days’ judicial custody by the Judicial First Class magistrate, Aluva to enable further investigations.

The police said that though the suspect was interrogated intensively throughout the day, he did not give any genuine reasons for taking the photographs.

Official Secrets Act

They also said that a case had been registered against him under the Official Secrets Act. But, the police refused to elaborate on the progress of the investigation by saying it was still in its initial stages.

Home searched

The sources said a police team searched Sali’s home in Malappuram on Monday, but failed to unearth any incriminating material.

The sources also said the suspect had taken the entry pass into the airport terminal in someone else’s name.

Mobile phone ban

Meanwhile, in the light of contract workers getting easy access to sensitive areas, the Director of the airport has directed the security personnel not to allow the workers to take mobile phones to their workplaces inside the airport.

At a meeting convened in the evening, the work contractors were given directions to employ a supervisor to observe the workers while inside the airport.

The workers were also warned that strict action, ranging from imposition of a fine to blacklisting of the contractor, would be initiated in case of failure to meet any of the conditions laid down by the authorities.
