Thiruvananthapuram: The district-level inauguration of the second phase of ‘Vazhiyora Thanal,’ a scheme to plant and nurture trees on the roadsides with the help of headload workers, will be held here on Tuesday. Forest Minister Benoy Viswom is scheduled to inaugurate the second phase of the social forestry initiative aimed at greening major roads in Kerala by planting shade and fruit trees on the sides of carriageways. The Forest Department will provide the saplings of teak, ‘poo maruthu,’ techoma, Singapore cherry, ‘kani konna,’ chamatha, neem, mango, mahogany, ‘chara konna,’ rain tree, silver oak, ‘anjili’ and ‘kambakam’ to be planted along the roadsides. The trees will be planted at a distance of 50 metres. By roping in headload workers’ unions, the department hopes to utilise the services of their members. The workers are expected to care for the saplings planted under the scheme, thereby ensuring their survival. The saplings to be planted in the second phase of Vazhiyora Thanal will be at least one metre high. Priority will be given to replacing saplings that fail to grow or are damaged. All the saplings will be provided tree guards for protection. The first phase of the scheme was launched last year. V. Sivankutty MLA is scheduled to preside over the inaugural function to be held at Killipalam on Tuesday evening. Mayor C. Jayan Babu and leaders of headload workers’ unions are expected to participate.
