NEW INITIATIVE: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma lighting a lamp to mark the launch of School Health programme in the city on Monday. — KOCHI: The first phase of the district School Health Programme was launched here at the Government Girls High School, Ernakulam on Monday. Inaugurating the programme, the Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said that a healthy new generation is important for the society and the programme hopes to reach the target.Mayor Mercy Williams presided over the programme. In her speech, Prof. Williams spoke about the people’s lax attitude towards waste disposal that is creating havoc for the Corporation. District Collector M. Beena, who welcomed the gathering, spoke about importance of the health cards that will be given to students as part of the School Health Programme. It will indicate the health markers of the student. Child-friendly school programme will be launched soon, she said.The programme will be launched in a hundred schools from the 88 panchayats, eight municipalities and the Corporation area in the first phase. The aim of the programme is to provide adolescent health education, environment cleanliness, source reduction of vector-borne diseases and anti-tobacco campaign. P. S. Shyla, district panchayat president, gave the keynote address and also released the schedule of the programme that was received by District Medical Officer K. T. Remani. The schedule for the child-friendly programme was released by N. A. Mani, the Corporation’s Standing Committee chairman for Health. District Education Officer K. Chandra received it. A poster on obesity and lifestyle diseases was also released on the occasion. District Panchayat’s Welfare Standing Committee chairman, R. M. Ramachandran. M. S. Sasikala, Deputy DMO, were among those who participated.
