Bangalore: The Bangalore University Syndicate has decided to increase the intake for all undergraduate courses in government colleges affiliated to it by 10 per cent. Announcing this to presspersons here on Monday, Vice-Chancellor H.A. Ranganath said that the Syndicate had taken this decision as there was a lot of demand for BBM and B.Com courses. “Many students from the rural areas are not able to enrol into these courses owing to limited seats. To cater to such students, the Syndicate decided to increase the number of seats. This will be effective from this academic year. The admission process is on and dates may be extended,” he said. Asked if the university would be able to cater to the needs of the students in terms of providing adequate infrastructure and teaching staff, he said that Karnataka Public Service Commission had already begun the recruitment process to fill the vacant posts of teachers. The university has also got the go ahead from the Syndicate to set up a Postgraduate Centre in Ramanagara. “The university will offer one novel and unique course at the centre. A committee will be formed to identify what course can be introduced and other technical details. The centre will be functional from 2009-10,” he said. The Syndicate also approved the decision to increase the hostel food fees from Rs. 25 a day to Rs. 35 a day. This has been done with an intention to improve quality and also because of the increase in the prices of essential commodities. “Currently, the university is spending close to Rs. 3.5 lakh a month on these hostels. We had to increase the fees due to inflation,” he added.
