Good scores: Hearing-impaired students greeting each other after their felicitation function organised by the Foundation for Art and Culture for Deaf in Bangalore on Monday.

BANGALORE: Jalaja beamed with pride as her daughter Tanuja G. walked up to the stage to receive her award. Tanuja is hearing impaired and she was one among 17 students who were felicitated at a ceremony held to honour hearing-impaired students who have battled all odds to score above 60 per cent in the 2008 SSLC examinations.

Today, Tanuja is pursuing a diploma in computer science and is on her way to an independent life, her mother says. “Education, just like life, is very difficult for these students. Even as a parent, we have to put in so much effort and time,” she explains.

Prizes

L.A. Ravi Subramanya gave away the prizes to hearing -impaired students from Bangalore and Mysore. Addressing the gathering, he said: “Society must take up the responsibility and encourage these students in their struggle. It is indeed an achievement considering they have to fight a battle every day.”

B.C. Ganesh, Chief Accountant of Nirman Shelters, also attended the function.

“People generally give awards on the basis of communities. We wanted to encourage people who study and deaf students who may find it a struggle,” said A.K. Umesh, Director of Foundation for Art and Culture for Deaf. He is a hearing-impaired person and has made it his life’s mission to contribute to the education of the physically challenged.
