PUDUCHERRY: More than 2,000 policemen, including plainclothes men, will be deployed on security duty during the 61st Independence Day celebrations in the Union Territory.

In the wake of the general security alert prevailing in the country following the serial bomb blasts in Karnataka and Gujarat, security has been stepped up, especially in the Puducherry and Karaikal regions of the Union Territory.

The Indira Gandhi Sports Complex at Upplam where Chief Minister N. Rangasamy would hoist the national tri-colour on August 15 had been brought under the security cover. High-rise buildings in and around the sports complex have been brought under the surveillance of the security personnel, Director-General of Police A. S Khan told The Hindu.

Similarly, security has been tightened in and around the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium at Kariakal where Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy is expected to hoist the national flag.

Mr. Khan said policemen had been asked to be vigilant and keep a close watch on vulnerable locations, including places of worship and crowded areas.

Vehicle check had been intensified to check the movement of anti-social elements and hoteliers have been asked to keep tab on the visitors, he said.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Karaikal Sindhu Pillai said the Station House Officers (SHOs) in all the police stations had been told to conduct meetings with owners of Internet parlours and STD booths to sensitise them on the security measures.

Besides strengthening patrolling along the coast and border areas, the SHOs have been asked to keep a vigil on the activists of fundamentalist outfits, she said.
