KOCHI: The CPI(M) will be taking up the issue of reservation in private sector for the Scheduled Castes, said A.K. Balan, Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes. Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday, Mr. Balan said that the party would take up issues of the Scheduled Castes that had remained unaddressed so far. “Many such issues will be taken up at the CPI(M)-led State-level convention of the Scheduled Castes to be held at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor, on Saturday.” The government would take an active role in finding solutions to the problems faced by them, he said. A lot of decisions regarding the welfare of the Scheduled Castes would emerge after the convention, said Mr. Balan, who is the chairman of the reception committee of the convention. CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat will inaugurate the convention at 2 p.m. State secretary of the party Pinarayi Vijayan will preside. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will deliver the main speech. Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Mr. Balan and other Ministers and top party leaders will take part in the convention. The main patron of the reception committee for the convention is the former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer.
