Corrections and clarifications

* * The second paragraph in a report, “Golden boy Phelps begins with a bang” (Sport, August 11, 2008), says: Netherlands won the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay in an Olympic record of 3:34.33. The same time was mentioned for the silver medal too. The Sports Desk says the gold medallist’s time was 3:33.76 as mentioned in the Results column, which is an Olympic record.

* * Argentina lost to Lithuania in its opening Group `A’ match in basketball whereas the heading wrongly says “Argentina, USA post wins” (Sport, August 11, 2008). The heading was corrected in the later editions.

* * In “Prapawadee wins 53 kg gold”, (Sport, August 11, 2008), it is mentioned that Prapawadee lifted a total of 221 kg, pulling off 95 kg in the snatch and an Olympic high of 126 kg in the clean and jerk. But the last paragraph says: “After setting the Olympic record in her second lift, she went for a World record clean and jerk in her third attempt. But the 126 kg was too much and she gave up halfway through the lift. “ The world record is 129 kg held by China’s Li Ping. Prapawadee attempted 130 kg.

* * The tenth paragraph in a report, “Xiexia gives China its first gold”, (Sport, August 10, 2008), says: “The Chinese lifter set the tone early and left the 14-member field to fight for the lesser medals by heaving 113 kg on the snatch on her very first attempt …” It should have been clean and jerk.

* * In 1914, Madras was called a Presidency. It came to be called State only after Independence. A report, "Interim stay of Gokhale Hall demolition granted" (Chennai, August 12, 2008), used the wrong word.
