Dev Varman beats Dent

WASHINGTON: Somdev Dev Varman earned his first ATP win — a 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-1 victory over American Taylor Dent to advance to the second round of the Legg Mason Classic tennis on Monday.

Qualifier Dev Varman — a two-time U.S. college singles champion — joined the professional tour in June after graduating from University of Virginia but has played primarily in futures and challengers events.

“I was a little nervous out there, to be honest with you,” Dev Varman said. “But after the first few games, that wore off.”

Dev Varman had lost in the first round here for the past two years.
