Corporate backing must for consistency: Bindra

Beijing: Fresh from his historic gold medal-winning performance the Beijing Olympics, Abhinav Bindra says he can visualise a sports renaissance in India provided the corporates chip in with some financial backing for the athletes.

In his first blog entry since winning the 10m air rifle gold, Bindra said corporate backing was a must to help Indians become consistent performers at the Olympic-level.

“I wish more private initiatives come up with corporate support apart from the backing of the Government,” he wrote in his blog.

“With our depth of talent and expanse of people I firmly believe India can be a World-class sporting power,” he said.

A surprise

The 25-year-old from Chandigarh, who is a management graduate, said the euphoria generated by his triumph has caught him completely by surprise.

“They have all been telling me what a huge achievement winning the gold medal is. I realise that but frankly the enormity of the goodwill generated has caught me by surprise,” he said. — PTI
