‘Semester system a burden on teachers and students’

Staff Correspondent

Teachers’ organisation to stage Statewide protest

RAICHUR: The All-India Democratic Teachers’ Organisation has decided to stage a Statewide protest rally in the last week of this month demanding that the State Government initiate action to abolish the new education policy introduced for primary and higher primary education and stop hiring teachers on contract.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, B. Bhagawan Reddy, convener of the State unit of the organisation, said the new education policy, which introduces the semester system, had increased the burden on teachers and students.

Objective-type questions now dominated 60 per cent of the question paper leaving the rest for theory.

This would not help strengthen the memory power of students, Mr. Reddy said. The Government should bring back the earlier system where students wrote annual examinations after the end of an academic year, he said.

On the delay in paying salaries to teachers, Mr. Reddy said the Government should make the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission applicable to primary and higher primary schools teachers and release their salary on the first of every month. It should also stop hiring teachers on contract and take steps to fill all vacant posts in government primary and higher primary schools.

He alleged that the School Development and Management Committees (SDMCs) were functioning in a dictatorial manner, adding that they were under the control of influential political leaders. This had affected the interests of teachers.

‘Abolish SDMCs’

The Government should abolish the SDMCs and allow coordination between teachers and parents to ensure the smooth functioning of schools, Mr. Reddy said.
