Inflation impact: Handbill informing the increase in fare pasted on one of the share-autorickshaws in Virudhunagar on Wednesday. VIRUDHUNAGAR: Share-autorickshaw operators in here have increased the fares with effect from Wednesday. Stickers, reading “Following the increase in diesel and spare parts prices, the fare has been hiked,” have been pasted on vehicles. One of the auto-owners, S. Ramamoorthy, said that all the eight share-autorickshaws, being operated between Virudhunagar old bus stand and Soolakarai, would implement the fare revision. “We have been collecting Rs.3 per passenger to cover seven km for the past seven years. Now that the input cost has gone up we have no other go but to increase it, that too by 50 paise only,” he said. Stating that the State Government had stipulated Re.1 per km as fare for share-autos, he said that the operators were at liberty to charge up to Rs.7 for the seven-km distance. Stiff competition from busesBut, with stiff competition from town buses and mini-buses, they could not increase it earlier, he added. But, now, inflation had reached a point wherein they could not resist increasing the fare anymore. “Diesel price has increased many times. Similarly, the price of many spare parts, including tyres, has gone up by 30 per cent. We cannot run our business with the same fare,” he added. Any further increase in fare, which would be more than that of buses/mini-buses, would only discourage people from using their services and hence the hike was restricted to 50 paise, he added. Mr. Ramamoorthy clarified that there was no violation of any of the regulations laid by the Regional Transport Office.
