The final trial on third runway would take place on August 21 Directive to expedite the connectivity projects which would open five new routes to the airport NEW DELHI: The Public Works Department and the Delhi Jal Board were on Tuesday instructed by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to complete their works related to renovation of the Indira Gandhi International Airport here as per schedule. Ms. Dikshit, who visited the third runway and renovated international departure and arrival areas of the airport, also directed developer of the airport, Delhi International Airport Limited, to provide provision for disaster management and to ensure a standby electric sub-station at the airport. During the visit, the Chief Minister, who was accompanied by Special Advisor Commonwealth Games Ramesh Narayanswami and other officials, was informed that the third runway would be 4.5 km long and 75 metres wide. The final trial on this runway would take place on August 21. For their part, the PWD officials assured the Chief Minister that a part of the drainage work assigned to them would be completed and integrated with the existing drainage that has been constructed by DIAL. Ms. Dikshit also directed all the agencies concerned with works in and around the airport to expedite the connectivity projects, which would open five new routes to the IGI Airport. She said the airport would become accessible from all sides through the Dwarka Circle Underpass, Dwarka Circle Northern Access, Northern Underpass, Mahipalpur Underpass and Dwarka Express Link Southern Access. Ms. Dikshit was informed that Phase-IA of the airport modernisation project would be completed in 2008. It would include refurbishment of international terminal, expansion of domestic arrival terminal, development of new domestic departure, commissioning of third runway and commissioning of new taxiways, fire stations and associated infrastructure. Thereafter, Phase-IB would be completed by 2010 and this would include the terminal building, 48 contact stands, 78 aerobridges, 20 remote parking bays, 90 walkalators, 47 escalators, 70 lifts, multi-level car parking, bus parking and general aviation facilities. Besides, the airport would be linked through a high speed dedicated Delhi metro corridor. With all the new facilities, the IGI Airport would have the capacity to handle 60 million passengers per annum by 2010.
