BANGALORE: Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai has, in a letter, urged his Maharashtra counterpart Ajit Ananthrao Pawar to instruct the engineers in charge of reservoirs to inform the State before releasing water from the dam. Referring to flooding in large tracts of land in Belgaum, Bagalkot and Bijapur districts owing to release of water from the Koyna dam by Maharashtra, Mr. Bommai said that advance information would help the Government take steps to save lives and property. The Union Water Resources Ministry had constituted a team led by its Additional Secretary to conduct an on-the-spot study in the wake of Maharashtra’s allegation that the flooding during July-August 2005 was due to mismanagement of water storage and release in the Alamatti dam. InundationQuoting a report of the team, the Minister said that inundation in the territory of Karnataka and consequent damage to life, property and standing crops, and disruption of communication lines were owing to the sudden and excess release of water from reservoirs in Maharashtra. Mr. Bommai said that this, coupled with heavy rainfall, could worsen the situation. There was flooding every monsoon and the district administrations in Belgaum, Bagalkot and Bijapur districts subjected to severe strain due to thism he said. People living on the banks of the Krishna river were always in panic. This should be avoided, the Minister added.
