ARIYALUR: Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board had revised the cost of underground drainage project for Ariyalur Municipality from Rs. 17.46 crore to Rs. 25.70 crore in its project report which has been forwarded to the Commissioner of Municipal Administration for approval, official sources said.

The project announced in this year’s State budget envisages laying of distribution lines in the town for a length of 39.89 km. Over 120 streets in 18 wards of the town will be covered. A 22-km-mainline leading to the sewerage treatment plant on a 12-acre site in the jurisdiction of Keezhapazhur village would also be laid. The project, experts say, warrants deft handling in the town with narrow roads. Collector R. Sudalaikannan has been conducting periodic meetings to expedite the project. The open drainage poses a health threat to the residents. During rain, overflowing drainages breed mosquitoes. Water usage in the municipality is to the extent of 15 lakh litres.

At present, the open drainages empty into Chitteri tank on the outskirts of the town. At a recent meeting on City Development Plan, the Collector announced that the drainage channels and the central portion of the tank would be deepened.

Jayamkondam is the other municipality in the district where the underground drainage project is to be implemented in the next phase.

The announcement is expected in the next budget, sources said.
