BSNL employees stage dharna

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: The members of the Berhampur telecom district unit of the BSNL Casual Karmachari Sangh held a dharna in front of the office of the General Manager of the telecom district (GMTD) in the city on Tuesday.

Activists of several other trade unions of the city and the Ganjam district secretary of the CPI(M), Kalu Charan Panda reached the spot to express their solidarity to the agitating casual employees. The GMTD held discussion with a delegation of agitators in the evening.

These casual workers were protesting against non-payment of minimum wage prescribed by the government by the public sector unit.

The irony is that some of the casual employees have served the BSNL for over two decades.

Apart from it the employees are also demanding basic amenities and social security measures like EPF and ESI that are prescribed by the labour laws.
