KOCHI: A project for the exploitation of high value yellowfin tuna resources off the Lakshadweep waters was launched by Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) here on Tuesday. The Rs 6.4-crore project is funded by the World Bank through the National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Of the estimated potential of 50,000 tonnes of oceanic tuna in Lakshadweep waters, only 15 per cent is currently being exploited. The project aims to evolve technologies for sustainable harvesting, post-harvesting and marketing of oceanic yellowfin tuna of the Lakshadweep Sea. The CMFRI, Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Department of Fisheries, Lakshadweep, Fisheries Survey of India and Marine Products Export Development Agency and private tuna entrepreneurs and exporters are involved in the project. K. Gopakumar, former Deputy Director General of ICAR inaugurated the programme. J. P. Mittal, national coordinator, NAIP, E.V. Radhakrishnan, head, Crustacean Fisheries division of the Institute, G. Sydarao, director CMFRI, Kuruvila Thomas, director, marketing, MPEDA, N. G. K. Pillai, head, Pelagic Fisheries division, CMFRI and T. K. Srinivasa Gopal, principal scientist, CIFT, spoke.
