TIRUPUR: The Tirupur Corporation began on Tuesday a drive against adulteration of groundnut oil. Three samples from a consignment were lifted and sent for testing, Corporation Health Officer K.R. Jawaharlal said. Mayor K. Selvaraj and Commissioner M. Ashokan had asked the health wing of the Corporation to carry out checks to prevent adulterated oil from being sold. “Adulteration of groundnut oil is normally high when festivals such as Deepavali approach. Sweets and savouries are prepared with this oil. When in great demand, there is chance of adulteration,” the official explained. Dr. Jawaharlal said he followed a van carrying cooking oil tins and intercepted it near the railway station. Led by him, a team of food inspectors and sanitary inspectors carried out checks at a dealer’s storehouse and lifted oil samples. If tests proved the oil had been adulterated, legal action under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954 would be initiated after obtaining the sanction of the Joint Director of Prevention of Food Adulteration. But, if the tests revealed that the oil was not palatable, the stocks would be destroyed under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, 1939. Dr. Jawaharlal said the common form of adulteration was the mixing of mineral oil or cotton seed oil in groundnut oil.
