VIJAYAWADA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded ex gratia of Rs. 3 lakhs for the kin of those killed as a result of the heavy rains and floods in Krishna district. CPI (M) district secretary V. Umamaheswara Rao, at a press conference on Tuesday, demanded that Rs. 1 lakh be given to those who suffered injuries in the events caused by the heavy rains and floods. He said the rains caused the death of 34 people, severe property loss and the inundation of standing crop in thousands of acres. But, the whirlwind tour of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday turned out to be a mere eye-wash. Dr. Reddy announced that Rs. 100 crores would be sanctioned for flood control works when he visited the district after the floods in 2005. But history repeated itself because of the negligent attitude of the officials. Mr. Rao said the officials had failed to provide relief to the victims. While there were 2,000 people in a relief camp, food packs were provided to only 500 and the rest were told to wait for food till late in the evening. There was news about the Chief Minister chiding officials for not spending money for improvement to Budameru, but it appeared as though it was a “drama staged jointly by the officers and the Government,” Mr. Rao said. “This is a government of words and not actions,” the CPI (M) leader said.
