Disaster Management course to be introduced

Junior Red Cross volunteers at a meeting organised by Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu, in Chennai on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University will start a specialised course in Disaster Management to address the urgent need for skilled manpower to tackle the emergency situations arising from natural calamites and terrorism, according to its Vice-Chancellor K. Meer Mustafa Hussain.

Addressing a gathering of Red Cross volunteers and students of Youth Red Cross and Junior Red Cross from the State on the occasion of the 59th anniversary celebrations of ‘Geneva Convention’ here on Tuesday, he said, “As terrorism poses a threat to peace and harmony in society, the Red Cross Society should be well equipped to play a key role in helping the victims of terrorism.”

“The Geneva Convention were the result of the efforts of Henry Dunant after witnessing the horror of the Battle of Solforino in 1859. The Convention set the standards of international law in times of armed conflict.

The convention cover treatment of non-combatants and Prisoners of War. The four treaties of the convention seek to ameliorate the conditions of the wounded and sick during armed conflict, Prisoners of War, and protect civilians in times of conflict. The Geneva Convention were revised and ratified in 1949,” said A. Kadar Basha, Honorary Advisor, Youth Red Cross.

“Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu, has been actively involved in rescue, relief and rehabilitation activities during natural calamities. We have thousands of volunteers who are always prepared to serve people in times of need,” said Vimala Ramalingam, president of Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu. Awards and prizes were given to Red Cross volunteers at the function.
