TIRUCHI: The School Education department is confident of enhancing the collection of money and materials to Rs. 20 crore from philanthropists, service organisations and industries for improving facilities in schools by this month-end.

For the School Improvement Conference in the district slated for the last week of August or early September, money and materials worth Rs. 12 crore have been mobilised so far, Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan informed a gathering of headmasters of high and higher secondary schools on Tuesday.

Public contributions have been in the form of movable or immovable properties, land, building, furniture, science articles and laboratory equipment, and commitment for construction of compound walls, improvement of toilets, and provision of drinking water facility.

District Educational Officers of Tiruchi, Lalgudi and Musiri and headmasters of 238 high and higher secondary schools took part in the meeting held to discuss the preparations for the conference.

With a view to galvanising the District Parent-Teachers’ Association into undertaking measures that would encourage government and aided schools to perform better, the CEO chaired the general body meeting of the association on Monday.

The meeting decided to arrange for coaching weak students at the block-level, and to conduct felicitation functions for retiring teachers. So far, retiring teachers were felicitated only at the school-level. District PTA would also organise felicitation functions for best-teacher awardees at national and state levels.
