“No need to discuss alliances now” CHENNAI: As part of the nation-wide efforts to bring together political parties, which are not part of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress alliances, the State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) held talks with the Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) to launch joint action on five issues. At a meeting held at the CPI(M) office on Sunday, communist leaders told VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan and party MLA Ravikumar about the need to have effective coordination on issues such as price rise, agrarian distress leading to farmers’ suicides, Indo-U.S. nuclear deal, communal forces and misuse of government institutions such as the CBI for political purposes. The CPI(M) was represented by party MP T.K. Rengarajan and Central committee members W.R. Varadha Rajan and G. Ramakrishnan. “We are in complete agreement with the Left parties on these issues and will co-ordinate with them as far as we can,” said Mr. Thirumavalavan. The VCK, a constituent of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA), raised the issue of the CPI(M)’s approach towards the DMK during the discussion. “But, we made it clear that we could not have any truck with the political parties that are in alliance with the Congress,” said Mr. Ramakrishnan. “We have not approached any other political party,” he added. Both the CPI(M) and the VCK leaders said the meeting had nothing to do with elections or alliances. “There is no need to discuss these issues now,” Mr. Ramakrishnan said. Mr. Thirumavalan said his party had no intention of leaving the DMK-led alliance. “We will continue in the alliance and face the elections.” On Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s appeal to the communist parties to remain in the DMK-led alliance, Mr. Ramakrishan said the party had nothing to say at the moment.
