Can’t work with Thirumavalavan: Selvam

CHENNAI: Legislature party leader of the Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK) K. Selvam has said that it is no longer possible for him to work with party leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, as their relationship has strained.

“I told him that I cannot continue to work with him in the party. But, I want to maintain a good relationship,” Mr Selvam told The Hindu.

Asked about reports that he had decided to quit the party to join the Bahujan Samaj Party headed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, Mr. Selvam said the offer was there for quite some time. “I have been asked to take responsibility of the party here. But, I have not made any decision so far. It is not easy for me to leave a party I am closely associated with,” he said.

Mr. Selvam had already met Ms Mayawati along with two Chennai Corporation Councillors V. Prabhu and Uma Sasavi belonging to the VCK. They went to Lucknow to attend the BSP rally.

The two councillors are also expected to leave the VCK with Mr Selvam. “We are unhappy with the way Mr Selvam is being treated in the VCK. But we have not taken any decision to join the BSP,” Mr Prabhu said.

Mr. Selvam, elected from the Mangalore Assembly constituency, said he was pained at allegations made against him by Mr. Thirumavalavan and others that he was indulging in ‘katta panchayat’ and bringing disrepute to the party.

“District secretaries of Cuddalore and Villupuram adopted resolutions demanding my expulsion from the party. Mr. Thirumavalavan never bothered to intervene to settle the issue within the party organisation. He could have asked me about the charges,” he said. He was not bothered about losing his MLA post. “I did not enter politics to get position,” said Mr. Selvam, who was with Puthiya Tamilagam before joining the Dalit Panthers, now renamed VCK.
