Mourners defy curfew

Special Correspondent

SRINAGAR: Senior Hurriyat Conference leader Sheikh Abdul Aziz, who was killed in police firing in Baramulla on Monday, was laid to rest here. Thousands, defying curfew, attended the funeral.

Thousands of people chanting pro-freedom slogans flocked to the martyrs’ cemetery at Eidgah.

Police and paramilitary forces had a tough time keeping them at bay. At several places, the police clashed with the protesters, used tear smoke shells and opened fire.

Some protesters even reached the residences of senior Hurriyat leaders Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, broke the police cordon and got them out to lead them to Eidgah. Both the leaders had been under house arrest.

Paying tributes to Sheikh Aziz, they said he was deliberately targeted. “The government of India is working at wiping out the Hurriyat leadership,” the Mirwaiz said. “Aziz was a strong pillar of the Hurriyat,” the Mirwaiz said.

He asked the people to continue peaceful protests till August 14 and to observe August 15 as a black day. The Mirwaiz said: “We [both factions of the Hurriyat Conference, JKLF, traders and chamber of commerce] stand united at this crucial stage.”
