Spot study: Cracks which developed in apartments in D.V. colony.

HYDERABAD: If there is an encore of last week’s rain, then the residents of three apartments in D.V. Colony will have to be evacuated.

This was the advice that the team of engineers gave after visiting the buildings that had developed cracks owing to the construction activity taken up by Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).

The civil engineers from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) along with Sanathnagar legislator M. Shashidhar Reddy inspected the construction site and buildings on Tuesday morning. “We have inspected the area and in case of heavy rains, it will be dangerous for the residents of the multi-storeyed buildings adjacent to the boundary wall of the construction site,” said Dr N.V. Ramana Rao, Professor of Civil Engineering, JNTU. Dr. Rao along with Dr M.R. Madhav, retired professor of civil engineering, IIT (Kanpur) were at the site for over two hours.

Mr. Shashidhar Reddy said that “ We will use this as an opportunity to ensure that such incidents don’t repeat again; engineers and architects need to be properly trained and should make sure that natural water ways are not disturbed during any construction activity,” he said. V.Ramudu, city planner, Secunderabad says that KIMS hasn’t deviated from the original plan but had failed to follow proper safety measures like putting sand bags or building a retaining wall. B. Krishnaiah, chairman, KIMS, said that they had started work only after they got permission from GHMC. “I assure the residents that any further damage to their buildings would be avoided,” he said.
