KOCHI: Mayor Mercy Williams on Tuesday launched a year-long campaign to protect environment by creating awareness using school children. The campaign, “Enyironmend,” undertaken by the Kochi chapter of Young Indians (Yi), the youth wing of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), appealed to children to ‘mend’ the environment in which they live. District Collector M. Beena and Corporation Secretary Mini Antony were also present at the function held at theRajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium. The district administration and Corporation had promised all support to the endeavour. More than 1,000 students from about 65 schools within the Corporation limits participated in the day-long competitions organised to mark the launch. Competitions in poster designing, composition of jingles, public speaking and creation of innovative ideas were held at junior (class 3 to 5) and senior (class 6 to 9) levels for English and Malayalam medium students. Pamela Anna Mathew, former chairperson of the CII gave away prizes to the winners of competitions at the valedictory function. N.S.K. Kumar, chairman of the Kochi chapter of CII presided over.
