Nepal parties in talks for consensus

Prerana Marasini

KATHMANDU: Though the major parties could not form a national government within the stipulated time, they are still holding parleys to form a government of consensus.

On Tuesday, Maoist Chairman Prachanda hoped for a consensus among the parties before the Prime Minister’s election slated for Friday.

The parties have intensified consultations to forge consensus. The meeting of the Standing Committee of CPN (UML) also agreed to support a government led by the Maoists, that includes Nepali Congress too.

The former general secretary of the party, Madhav Kumar Nepal, told reporters that the party has no plans to make a leftist government, by aligning just with the Maoists. He also said the Defence Ministry should be given to Nepali Congress. Nepali Congress has been saying they need Defence Ministry to join the government.
