E.V. Velu TIRUVANNAMALAI: The State government has allotted Rs. 7,852 crore for education development to raise the standard, Food Minister E.V. Velu has said. He was inaugurating an additional school building constructed at the cost of Rs.4.3 lakh and a laboratory building built at the cost of Rs. 2 lakh under Sarva Siksha Abhiyan in a school at Periya Kolappadi in Chengam panchayat union on Monday. Mr. Velu said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had sanctioned more allotment for education development than under the previous regime, which had allotted Rs.4,110 crore. Entrance examination for admission to engineering and medical colleges was abolished to enable more rural students to get admitted to professional colleges. The government had appointed 30,916 teachers in 928 schools, and placed 47,987 teachers in time payscale, Mr. Velu said. The government had established a welfare board for narikkuravas. The narikkurava women had established self-help groups and were engaged in self-employment, selling pins, needles and chains, with the help of government assistance. While these people were once leading a nomadic life, they were now engaged in business in the same place , Mr. Velu said. He later distributed colour television sets to 315 persons and cheques for Rs.20, 000 each towards marriage assistance to 22 persons at a function held in Chinna Kolappadi. He also gave away marriage assistance cheques of Rs.15, 000 each to 40 persons, Rs.1.60 lakh loan to narikkuravas’ women’s self-help groups, house site pattas to 10 persons and bicycles to 115 students at a function in Periya Kolappadi. M. Rajendran, Tiruvannamalai Collecyor, presided. T. Venugopal, Tirupattur MP, Polur M. Varadan, Chengam MLA, G. Kumar, chairman, Chengam panchayat union, V. Balamurugan, Chief Educational Officer, M. Kuzhandhaivelu, special officer, Tiruvannamalai District Central Cooperative Bank, T. Kumar, Special Deputy Collector (CTV), A. Sonachalam, Block Development Officer (BDO) and Thamizhchelvi, Chengam tahsildar, spoke. Village panchayat presidents A. Dharman (Periya Kolappadi) and A. Unnamalai (Chinna Kolappadi) welcomed the gathering. G. Mani, school headmaster, Periya Kolappadi and N. Soundararajan, BDO, proposed a vote of thanks.
