KOLLAM: Chairperson of the State Women’s Commission D. Sreedevi and members of the commission T. Devi and Meenakshi Thampan on Wednesday visited the house of Anoopa Mary, the 23-year-old nun who committed suicide on Monday last, at Kanjiracode near here. The commission members took statements from Anoopa’s father, Papachan, mother, Bijiamma, and other relatives. In his statement, Mr. Papachan said Anoopa Mary was subjected to mental torture. He said his daughter was made to wash latrines and do menial jobs. However, soon after the commission members left, Mr. Papachan reiterated his allegations of sexual harassment to the mediapersons who were present there. He said he stood by the allegation he had raised on Tuesday and that he would present proof of this at the appropriate time. State president of Bharatiya Janata Party P.K. Krishnadas also called on Mr. Papachan and offered his condolences. Crime Branch probeMeanwhile, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan announced on Wednesday that Inspector General of Police Harinath Misra of the Crime Branch would enquire into the suicide of the nun. The nun’s family would be given Rs.2 lakh.
