Lehra power project to start production by October

NEW DELHI: Stating that the prestigious Lehra Mohabbat thermal power project near Bhatinda in Punjab will go fully commercial by end-October, nearly 15 months behind schedule, Minister of State for Power, Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday said that the 2X250 MW units will cater to the power requirements of the State to a large extent.

Stating that he had reviewed the working of the project that had suffered due to delays by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited to complete the EPC contracts on time, Mr. Jairam said the 2X250 MW units at the Guru Hargobind Thermal Power Plant at Lehra Mohabbat in Punjab would start commercial production by October this year. In addition to this, there would be two 250 MW units at Lehra Mohabbat in Punjab to scale up power generation in the State, along with two additional 250 MW units at the Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Power Plant in Bhatinda; three 660 MW units at Talwandi Sabo to be put up by Sterlite Industries and two 250 MW units at Gobindwal to be put up by GVK Group. Apart from this, 660 MW and 800 MW units are being planned at Rajpura and Gidderbah, he informed.

Stating that Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh was keen on resolving the problems faced by the people of Punjab, Mr. Jairam said the assurance given by the Prime Minister to supply 1500 MW of power to Punjab from the proposed 4000 MW project of NTPC at Lara in Chattisgarh would be fulfilled.
