Power cuts lifted temporarily

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The power cuts in force from July 14 in the State have been lifted temporarily. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet subcommittee headed by Energy Minister K.S. Eshwarappa on Wednesday.

According to a press release, the decision to lift the power cuts was taken in the wake of good rainfall in the catchment areas of hydel reservoirs leading to improvement in the power supply situation.

While power cuts have been lifted completely in urban areas, villages will have power supply for 17 hours a day (nine hours of three-phase supply, eight hours of single-phase supply and no supply for seven hours).

Sources told The Hindu that the decision to lift the power cuts was taken as daily power consumption had come down to below 100 million units.

The Cabinet subcommittee will meet again to review the situation if consumption exceeds 100 mu, they said. On Tuesday, the State’s power consumption stood at 92 mu.

The press release stated that the Raichur Thermal Power Station had been directed to ensure that a minimum of six generating units of the seven in the station generate power constantly.

Similarly, the Bellary Thermal Power Station has been directed to take steps to increase generation from its first unit, which recently commenced commercial operation, to the full potential of 500 MW by August-end.
